Accounting & Taxation: Careers and Job Opportunities

The career potential for accounting and taxation professionals is strong in every industry and every type of organization. Accounting firms, small businesses, multi-national corporations, non-profit companies and government agencies compete to hire the best talent. This demand is expected to grow over the coming years.

At Utah Career College, we focus on preparing students to take advantage of those opportunities. Contact us for information on our two-year Associate in Accounting degree program, offered on-campus and online.

Accounting — more than columns of numbers

In the corporate world, accounting is more than processing numbers — the accountant is the one who knows where the money is. As a member of an accounting department in any size of company, you may be expected to organize, analyze and interpret financial data for managers and executives, and participate in strategic planning and decision-making.

Home-based accounting and tax consulting

Many graduates of ourAssociate in Accounting & Tax Specialist degree program establish home-based tax preparation, accounting and business consulting services. The program includes, in addition to accounting courses, includes coursework that prepares students for small business management. This fundamental business training is essential for those who wish to establish profitable independent companies. It also prepares an accounting professional to give sound advice to clients in a variety of business management positions.

Accounting offers job security in the face of economic fluctuations

The demand for accounting and tax specialists remains strong in an economic downturn. While companies may trim costs by cutting back investment in finance or marketing, they need to monitor the flow of money closely in order to identify inefficiencies. When the economy is expanding, increased business activity translates into an increase in accounting job opportunities.

Accounting and taxation career opportunities

Accountants provide services in three primary areas, each of which is expected to grow over coming years:

  • Auditing: Increased regulatory requirements have resulted in a growing demand for auditors, both internal and independent.
  • Financial and tax accounting: Small businesses and individuals turn to accounting firms for bookkeeping, payroll, accounting and tax services. Many of those firms are home-based accounting services.
  • Management accounting: A management accountant helps a company achieve maximum profitability by providing information that helps managers and executives make sound decisions.

What skills do employers look for in an accountant or bookkeeper?

At Utah Career College, our Accounting Program Advisory Committee, a group of Salt Lake City area accounting professionals and employers, regularly reviews our accounting degree programs to see that our graduates have the skills necessary for successful careers in accounting. In response to the committee’s advice, we focus on three critical areas of training:

  • Business and accounting computer applications
  • Payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, tax accounting and inventory
  • Communication, organizational and teamwork skills
