Are you considering a career in health and exercise science? College programs and policies vary widely —be sure to ask the right questions and weigh the answers carefully before choosing a school. Then look forward to a rewarding career.
Questions to ask about a college’s health and exercise science program:
How large are classes? At a major university, you might be one of several hundred students in a lecture hall, while a small private school will limit class sizes. At Utah Career College, a typical health and exercise science class will have six to twelve students.
What degree programs does the college or university offer? A 2-year associate degree might get you into a job as a personal trainer or recreation leader quickly, while a 4-year bachelor’s degree may be required for other positions. Generally, pay is higher with the higher level of degree. A representative of the school should be ready to help you evaluate programs in light of your personal situation. Contact UCC and a representative will schedule a personal conference.
Do instructors have experience? Some university professors have spent their entire careers in the classroom, while some schools hire instructors with little education or experience. At UCC, our instructors have excellent academic credentials and extensive experience in the health and exercise science field.
Does the school offer career placement services? At a large university, career placement services might consist of a Web site with a few job postings and interview tips. Each Utah Career College graduate is entitled to personalized career placement assistance, including identification of specific job opportunities.
How practical is the health and exercise science training? Some colleges grant degrees in health and exercise science to students who take every class online. At UCC, students practice exercise techniques in hands-on sessions on-campus and at regional fitness centers. Every Health and Exercise Science course provides practical, applied training.
Do students participate in committees or clubs? Health and Exercise Science (HES) students at UCC participate in the Student Advisory Committee (SAC) and plan social events for students in the Health and Exercise Science program.
Do graduates hold national certifications? Graduates of the UCC HES programs are prepared to sit for a variety of national certifications. Instructors work with each student to identify the most appropriate certifications for that student.
