According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment outlook for trained health information technology specialists is excellent. Not only is the health care industry growing, but insurers, government agencies and consumers constantly question the cost of medical tests, treatments, and procedures. Providers and insurers need qualified personnel to handle electronic coding and transfer of medical records according to strict HIPAA regulations.
At Utah Career College, we offer an Associate in Health Information Technology degree program that prepares graduates to protect their employers’ interests with accurate, professional and ethical medical record-keeping procedures. Contact us for more information.
A shortage of trained health information technology specialists
In most employment sectors administrative assistants, accounting clerks and information technology specialists can effectively perform their responsibilities with general knowledge of business fundamentals.
In contrast, health information technology specialists need industry-specific knowledge. In addition to technical training in computer and office procedures they need knowledge of medical terminology, medical ethics and state and federal regulations covering medical information. Many employers look for national certification to verify that an applicant has those skills.
This program was developed in consultation with an advisory board made up of employers and professionals active in the health care industry. They identified medical and administrative skills and knowledge valued by employers. In small classes, guided by instructors who are themselves experienced professionals, our students receive thorough training in areas that will prepare them for success in this rapidly growing field.
As graduates, our students look forward to a wealth of career opportunities with hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, law offices and government agencies. They are eligible for positions as medical coders, medical records specialists and health information analysts. They are prepared to assume a variety of responsibilities, including bookkeeping, insurance coding, HIPAA compliance, and general administrative procedures.
