As a graduate of the health information technology (HIT) program at Utah Career College (soon to be Broadview University), you will receive a Certificate of Entry-level Proficiency. Subject to experience requirements, you will also be qualified to sit for national certification exams administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). AAPC Certification for Health Information Technology
AAPC certification is a strong nationally-recognized credential for health information technology technicians. These allied health specialists provide medical recordkeeping services to physician offices, hospital outpatient facilities, ambulatory surgical centers and payer organizations. AAPC certification demonstrates mastery of the medical, legal and technical knowledge necessary to provide accurate, efficient and ethical medical coding and billing as well as other recordkeeping services. There are varying work experience requirements for the following exams:
Certified Professional Coder®
The Certified Professional Coder® (CPC®) has demonstrated proficiency in accurately coding claims for medical diagnoses, procedures and services performed in physician-based settings. This certification requires two years of experience in the field.
Areas of proficiency include evaluation and management, anesthesia, surgical services, radiology, pathology and medicine. The CPC® also has a sound knowledge of rules and regulations applying to health information technology management, including medical coding and billing.
The CPC® can efficiently and accurately handle claims denials, medical necessity, bundling and reimbursement.
The Certified Professional Coder – Hospital® (CPC-H®)
The CPC-H® is a health information technology professional employed by a hospital or ambulatory patient care group.
Certified Professional Coder – Payer® (CPC-P®)
The CPC-P®, as an employee or as a self-employed contractor, handles claims management and auditing for an insurance payer.
Additional certification exams for health information technicians
A student can sit for exams offered by The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) upon graduation from the Health Information Technology Associate Degree program. NCCT offers professional certification in Insurance & Coding Specialist (NCICS). An NCICS is qualified to serve as a health insurance claims processor or medical coder.
