Massage Therapy classes at Broadview University (formerly Utah Career College) provide students with hands-on practice in the classroom, reinforced by opportunities to work on clients from the general public. Every technical course in massage therapy is taught by an instructor with extensive experience in the modalities covered.
- In addition to Massage Therapy courses described below, the Massage Therapy Diploma program includes medical, health science and business courses.
- The Associate in Massage Therapy degree program includes all coursework for the diploma program as well as 30 credits in general education courses.
Massage Therapy courses are offered at campus locations in West Jordan (15 miles south of Salt Lake City Center), Layton and Orem. Many of the remaining program requirements can be completed through our Online Education Department or at any campus.

Massage Therapy Course Descriptions
MS107 Swedish Massage - 2 Credits
Prerequisites: MA110. Students receive hands-on training in skills and knowledge necessary to perform full-body Swedish massage and basic chair massage routines. Topics include the history of massage, legal considerations, equipment, safety practices, basic musculoskeletal identification, benefits and contraindications of massage, technique application, client consultation, assessment and basic documentation.
MS151 Pathology for Massage Therapists - 4 Credits
Prerequisites: MA110. This course introduces postural analysis and disease conditions for eleven body systems, providing students with related skills needed by massage therapists.
MS155 Pregnancy/Special Populations Massage - 3 Credits
Prerequisites: MS107. Students receive hands-on training in skills and knowledge necessary to perform pregnancy massage. They are also introduced to massage techniques commonly performed in geriatric and hospice settings. Each student performs hands-on applications of pregnancy and special populations techniques in lab.
MS156 Myofascial Release - 3 Credits
Prerequisites: MS107 and HS145 or HS150. Students receive hands-on training in skills and knowledge needed to manipulate connective tissue in a full-body myofascial release routine. Each student performs myofascial techniques in lab.
MS157 Hot Stone Massage/Spa Techniques - 3 Credits
Prerequisites: MS107. Students receive hands-on training in skills and knowledge needed to perform full-body hot stone massage. Students are introduced to aromatherapy, reflexology, paraffin, body wrap treatments and hydro/cryotherapy. Each student performs hands-on applications of hot stone and select spa techniques in lab.
MS195 Business of Massage - 4 Credits
Prerequisites: MS107. Students learn scope of practice, ethical standards, policies and regulations that affect a massage business. Topics include establishing self-care strategies and successful therapeutic relationships; forming professional alliances; attracting particular markets using sales, marketing and retention strategies; and how to apply financial, administrative and insurance processes to the massage profession. Students create business plan outlines for massage practices.
MS216 Deep Tissue/Trigger Point Massage - 2 Credits
Prerequisites: MS107 and HS145 or HS150. Students receive hands-on training in skills and knowledge needed to affect and manipulate deep tissue in full-body deep tissue routines. Students gain skills and knowledge necessary to perform full deep-tissue routines. Each student performs deep-tissue massage techniques in lab.
MS217 Deep Tissue/Trigger Point Clinic - 1 Credit
Prerequisites: MS216. This course is a hands-on class where the student performs massage techniques learned in Deep Tissue/Trigger Point class in a clinic setting on outside clientele. The student experiences a variety of body types and interactions with the public. Clients fill out health history forms and evaluations on the students' performances and students are required to maintain S.O.A.P. notes for each client.
MS245 Anatomy and Physiology for Massage - 4 Credits
Prerequisites: MA100, MA110 and MS 107. Students explore advanced human anatomy and physiology emphasizing the structures, functions and pathophysiology of the eleven body systems as they relate to massage therapy practitioners.
MS258 Introduction to Thai/Energy Work - 2 Credits
Prerequisites: MS216, MS217 and HS145 or HS150. This course introduces students to Thai massage techniques and explores various energy techniques. Students learn basic Thai Massage and Energy Work techniques. Each student performs Thai Massage and Energy Work techniques in lab.
MS262 Sports Massage - 2 Credits
Prerequisites: MS216 and MS217. Students learn skills and knowledge needed to work with common rehabilitative and sport injury conditions and symptoms, including those necessary to perform a full sports massage routine. Each student performs sports massage techniques in lab.
MS263 Sports Massage Clinic - 1 Credit
Prerequisites: MS262. This course is a hands-on class where the student performs massage techniques learned in Deep Tissue/Trigger Point class in a clinic setting on outside clientele. The student experiences a variety of body types and interactions with the public. Clients fill out health history forms and evaluations on the students' performances and students are required to maintain S.O.A.P. notes for each client.
MS271 Massage Clinical Practicum - 1 Credit
Prerequisites: MS155, MS156, MS217 and MS262. In this capstone course, students integrate skills, knowledge and abilities acquired in all massage technique courses as they perform massage at school approve practicum site. At the Utah Career College Campuses the approved practicum site will be on campus and students will be under the direct supervision of a qualified faculty member. The course includes review of select skills as clinical practicum preparation.
MS301 Craniosacral Therapy/Lymph Drainage Therapies - 3 Credits
Prerequisites: MS156 and MS263. This course introduces advanced skills and knowledge necessary to perform full craniosacral and lymphatic drainage treatments. Each student performs craniosacral and lymphatic drainage massage techniques in lab.
