Opportunities in medical assisting
As a graduate of UCC’s two-year Associate in Medical Assisting degree program or shorter Medical Assisting Diploma program, you will be qualified for entry-level positions in the field. You will also be prepared to sit for the CMA (AAMA) Certified Medical Assistant exam. As a graduate and a CMA, you will be ready for jobs including the following:
- Medical assistant (CMA)
- Medical insurance coder
- Medical receptionist
- Phlebotomist
- EKG technician
- Patient advocate
Clinical and administrative duties of a medical assistant
As a medical assistant, you will use your communication skills as you work with patients and clinic staff; use your medical knowledge as you help a doctor evaluate a patient’s condition; use your technical skills as you perform laboratory procedures; and use your office management skills and legal knowledge in medical coding and billing services. You will be a key player in the delivery of medical services. Duties might include the following:
- Drawing blood and other specimen collection
- Processing specimens
- Perform microbiological testing
- Patient care and education
- Administering an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG)
- Giving injections and administering other medications
- Assisting a doctor during in-office surgery, sterilizing instruments, setting up trays and seeing that the surgical field is sterile
- Taking vital signs, charting
- Using medical software for recordkeeping
- Ensuring that patient records procedures are HIPAA compliant
- Billing/Collections/Reimbursement
- Insurance coding
- Taking X-rays and ultrasounds
