Services provided by medical coding and billing technicians

Doctors, hospitals, health insurance companies and other organizations involved in delivery of medical services are closely supervised by government agencies, accountable to consumers and responsible for observing patient privacy as outlined in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). They rely on medical coding and billing specialists to efficiently and accurately:

  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Medical insurance coding
  • Organize paperwork involved in filing insurance claims
  • Handle accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Enter codes for medical tests, treatments and procedures into computer databases in compliance with federal laws regarding patient records

U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics: Careers in Medical Coding & Billing

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment related to medical coding, billing and record-keeping “is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through 2014 because of rapid growth in the number of that will be increasingly scrutinized by health insurance companies, regulators, courts, and consumers. Also, technicians will be needed to enter patient information into computer databases to comply with Federal legislation mandating the use of electronic patient records.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics goes on to state that “technicians with a strong background in medical coding will be in particularly high demand. Changing government regulations and the growth of managed care have increased the amount of paperwork involved in filing insurance claims. Additionally, health care facilities are having difficulty attracting qualified workers, primarily because of the lack of both formal training programs and sufficient resources to provide on-the-job training for coders.”
