At Utah Career College, nursing students receive rigorous, thorough training in technical skills and scientific knowledge. They also receive training in critical thinking, communication, advocacy and leadership. The resulting complex skill set is essential for effective collaborative and independent decision-making. Graduates of our college’s nursing program are prepared for careers as registered nurses. As RNs, they will promote, maintain and restore clients’ health in hospitals, clinics, long-term care facilities and home health care agencies.
The UCC Nursing Program Advisory Board (PAC), a group including prominent Salt Lake City area medical professionals and employers, oversees the program, ensuring professional training at UCC provides the skills employers seek.
The Utah Career College Nursing Program
The following are distinguishing elements of our college's nursing program:
- Personal attention: Our one-on-one support begins as soon as you call us or request information online. A representative will answer your questions and help you evaluate our program in light of your personal goals and resources. (At a large university, you may be required to attend a group information session before you ever have the opportunity to ask a question.)
- Flexibility: Our Associate of Applied Science in Nursing program is the only RN program in Utah that can be completed at night. Classes, clinicals and labs are offered in the evening and during the day. New cohorts start every quarter, and waiting lists are short.
- Feedback and academic support: Beginning in quarter 4, students take HESI specialty tests every quarter to measure their readiness for the NCLEX licensure exam. If a student needs tutoring or remediation, that help will be provided early in the program.
- Small classes: We want you to get to know your nursing instructors and get answers when you have questions. At UCC, there are never more than ten students in a lab or clinical, and class sizes are typically less than 20. In contrast, nursing classes at a large university will often have more than 100 students.
Nursing for today’s community
Our nursing program mission and philosophy focus on preparing students for professional success as registered nurses. As graduates, they will provide holistic health care services, demonstrate respect for clients in diverse populations and at all stages of life, respond to societal and world changes and contribute to the body of knowledge through research.
Nursing program accreditation
In December of 2004, Utah Career College was granted probational approval by the Utah State Board of Nursing. In May 2008, the program received candidate status from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission Inc. (NLNAC). A site visit for initial accreditation is scheduled for Feb 3-5, 2009; and in June 2009, the program expects to gain full accreditation from the NLNAC.
Utah Career College is accredited to grant associate degrees by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT).
