Nursing College Courses and Class Descriptions


At Utah Career College, nursing courses hands-on training and academic rigor students need to prepare for the rigors and responsibilities of careers in nursing. Nursing courses are offered at the UCC campus in West Jordan, 13 miles south of Salt Lake City, in day and evening sessions.

In addition to the nursing courses described below, the Associate in Nursing degree program requires science and general education courses, many of which can be taken either on campus or online.

HS115 General Nutrition; 4 Credits

Prerequisite: None. This course builds a basic understanding of nutrition as it relates to general health. Topics include basic nutrition facts, dietary guidelines for a healthy diet, and dieting trends. Students in this course will also explore how various nutrients are absorbed and utilized by the human body.

MA210 Chemistry for Health Professionals; 3 Credits

Prerequisite: None. This course examines general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry, with an emphasis on those concepts needed by a health professional.

ME110 Anatomy; 4 Credits

Prerequisites: None. This course is a general introduction to human anatomy with emphasis on organization of the human body and body systems, anatomic position & direction. Body systems include: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, heart and circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary and endocrine systems. Students will learn through both lecture and laboratory exercises.

ME120 Physiology; 4 Credits

Prerequisites: ME110, MA210. This course is a general introduction to human anatomy with emphasis on function of the human body and body systems. Body systems include: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, heart and circulatory, respiratory, digestive, urinary and endocrine systems. Students will learn through both lecture and laboratory exercises.

ME140 Pathophysiology; 4 Credits

Prerequisite: ME120. This course examines the mechanisms of disease and pain, alterations of the normal functioning of body systems, medical interventions, lab values, and diagnostic tests.

ME220 Microbiology; 3 Credits

Prerequisite: MA210. This course examines microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, & parasites, and their interaction with the human body. 

ME240 Pharmacology I; 2 Credits

Prerequisites: NA116, MA210, ME220, HS115. This course covers the basic principles of pharmacology and drug therapy and the identification of simple, common pharmacotherapeutic, pharmacodynamic and pharmacogenetic agents associated with the disease process and body systems. Concepts taught include: dosage calculations, drug categories, side effects and nursing considerations for oral medications and simple parenteral treatments. 

ME250 Pharmacology II; 2 Credits

Prerequisites: NA126, ME240. This course covers advanced principles of pharmacology and drug therapy and identification of critical pharmacotherapeutic, pharmacodynamic, and pharmacogenetic agents associated with disease process and body systems. Concepts taught include: advanced dosage calculations, drug categories, side effects and nursing considerations.

NA106 Introduction to Nursing; 2 Credits

Prerequisite: None. This course prepares the nursing student with foundational knowledge necessary to succeed in nursing courses as well as the professional role of a nurse. It includes the philosophy and framework of the nursing program, study skills for success in nursing school, a brief introduction to the NCLEX test plan, basic medical terminology, medical abbreviations, APA format and beginning principles of researching on the internet.

NA116 Nursing Fundamentals I; 5 Credits

Prerequisites: ME120, ME220, NA106. This course is a combination of lecture and skills lab to provide the clinical knowledge and basic skills and concepts of nursing practice. The nurse process, physical assessment, patient history, documentation, vital signs, feeding, wound care, infection control, errors, falls, transfers and OSHA regulations are explored.

NA126 Nursing Fundamentals II; 7 Credits

Prerequisites: HS115, ME140, NA116. This course is a combination of lecture, clinical and skills lab that focuses on the nurse as the caregiver in evidence-based practice. RN competencies include: phlebotomy, IV therapy, catheters, NG tube and sterile field. Integration of legal and ethical standards, professional development, leadership and change theory will be introduced.

NA216 Medical and Surgical Assessment I; 7 Credits

Prerequisites: ME240, NA126. This course is Part 1 of a two-part series focusing on in-depth care for hospitalized adults. Lecture, lab and clinical experiences will teach assessment, physiology, disease/conditions and care planning for sensory, integumentary, respiratory, hematologic and cardiovascular systems. Concepts also taught are those associated with quality nursing practice including critical thinking, cultural competence, heath history and assessment, client teaching, stress and pain management, end of life care, inflammation, infection, healing, immune response, fluid and electrolyte balance and perioperative care. Application of the nursing process will focus on decision-making, prioritizing care and applying skills and knowledge to patient care in various acute care settings.

NA226 Medical and Surgical Assessment II; 7 Credits

Prerequisites: ME250, NA216. This course is Part II of a two-part series focusing on in-depth care for hospitalized adults. Lecture, lab and clinical experiences will teach assessment, physiology, disease/conditions and care planning for gastrointestinal, urinary, endocrine, reproductive, nervous and musculoskeletal body systems. Concepts associated with shock and multiple organ dysfunction, respiratory failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome and emergency care situations will be taught. Application of the nursing process will focus on decision-making, prioritizing care and applying skills and knowledge to patient care in various acute care settings.

NA236 Mental Health; 3 Credits

Prerequisites: ME250, NA216, SS116.  This course is a combination of lecture and clinical experience and focuses on developing, implementing and evaluating psychotherapeutic interventions for clients across the lifespan with mental health and psychiatric problems.

NA246 Obstetrics/Maternal; 5 Credits

Prerequisites: ME250, NA216. The focus of this lecture, lab and clinical course is the nursing needs of the childbearing individual and family. Clinical experience in preventive, supportive and therapeutic family/patient centered care is offered while caring for the perinatal client.

NA256 Pediatrics; 5 Credits

Prerequisites: ME250, NA216.  The focus of this lecture and clinical course is on the nursing needs of children and families. Clinical experience is offered in the hospital as well as the clinic and family settings to care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, pre-adolescents and adolescents.

NA276 Nursing Leadership; 2 Credits

Prerequisites: ME250, NA226. This course focuses on the role of the nurse as a manager of care and as a leader in the profession. It includes application of the nursing process, multi-disciplinary care with a focus on delegation and supervision, as well as conflict resolution, evidence based practice and reality shock.

NA286 Nursing Preceptored Synthesis; 4 Credits

Prerequisites: Final quarter standing, ME110 through ME250, NA106 through NA276; Co-requisite: NA296. In this capstone clinical practice course students are guided by faculty as they apply concepts of management, application of the nursing process, leadership, delegation and supervision in caring for patients through in-depth learning experiences in selected acute care or long term care placements with a preceptor nurse. The caregiver role of professional nurses with patients and their families is emphasized.

NA296 NCLEX Review; 4 Credits

Prerequisites: Final quarter standing, ME110 through ME250, NA106 through NA276; Co-requisite: NA286. The main focus of this course is preparation for the National Council Licensure Examination – Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) and successful transition into employment as a registered nurse. The student will prepare a study schedule and implement study skills and test-taking strategies in preparation for the HESI Exit Exam and the NCLEX – RN.
