Eric Kraut
Equine Veterinary Technology Instructor, Utah Career College-West Jordan
Hello,
I would like to tell you a little about the equine portion of the Veterinary Technology program at Utah Career College in West Jordan. I am the equine instructor, an Equine Veterinary Technician and graduate of this very program.
I live with Changa, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Sunny, an American Quarter Horse. The current curriculum taught at UCC was designed with the help of AVMA guidelines and equine veterinarian Dr. Lyle Barbour. The goal of the curriculum is to provide the student with the knowledge and skills to succeed in the equine veterinary industry.
As a student, you will learn through classroom lecture and hands on labs with the help of our horse George. George was one of many rescue animals helped by our program, and has stayed on to work with our students on a regular basis.
The classroom lectures will provide you with the education you need to succeed in the Veterinary Technicians National Exam (VTNE). Your lab experience gives you real-world skills. You will learn about equine anatomy and terminology, how to take radiographs, give vaccinations, bandage properly, how to work safely around horses, draw blood, and assist the doctor in other veterinary procedures. During the quarter-long Equine course, we will hear from guest speakers such as an equine doctor or technician, equine behaviorist or a nutritional expert – specialists in a particular part of the equine industry.
The variety of approaches to education we employ at UCC will provide you with a well-rounded educational experience. If you have any questions about our equine program in West Jordan, please feel free to contact me at 801-304-4224 extension 179.
