As a graduate of the Associate in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology program at Utah Career College-West Jordan, you will be prepared to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). VTNE is recognized by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards and the National Association of Veterinary Technicians as a measure of knowledge, skills and professional competency of veterinary technicians. The certification/licensure earned upon passing the VTNE is a powerful addition to a resume, demonstrating a high level of preparation.
Information on VTNE preparation at Utah Career College
As a national certification exam, VTNE facilitates the transfer of veterinary technician credentials smoothly from one state to another. The test covers areas of responsibility commonly assigned to entry-level veterinary technicians, including the following topics:
- Veterinary pharmacy and pharmacology, client education
- Veterinary surgical prep and assisting
- Veterinary dentistry
- Veterinary laboratory procedures
- Animal care and nursing
- Diagnostic imaging
- Anesthesia and analgesia
The veterinary technology program at UCC provides rigorous training, reinforced at every point with hands-on practice. Working in small classes with dedicated instructors, students master difficult material. They are well-prepared for the VTNE and careers in veterinary technology.
One of the final veterinary courses is the VTNE Certification Review, where students review material from throughout the program.
Membership in SCNAVTA
Students in our West Jordan veterinary technology program enjoy membership in the Utah Career College Student Chapter of National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (SCNAVTA). The UCC SCNAVTA is involved in a number of activities each term, including Strut Your Mutt.
As a member of SCNAVTA, a student will be able to exchange ideas with other veterinary technology students and professionals, register for CE (continuing education) offerings, receive discounts on CE events, have access to job postings in specific locales such as Salt Lake City or Ogden, or within certain veterinary technology specialties. They will have opportunities to hone leadership and public speaking skills, build a professional network within the veterinary community and work to improve the profession.
Student membership in NAVTA
A student membership to the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (in 2008, $25 a year), includes a subscription to the NAVTA Journal and access to a variety of online resources.
