Comparing Paralegal College Programs

A student considering a career as a paralegal should carefully evaluate a college or university program before enrolling. The school should provide information on placement rates, scheduling options, qualifications of instructors, typical class activities, program completion rates, class sizes and program goals.

Legal degree programs at Utah Career College hold up well when compared to those of any school or university in Salt Lake City or the surrounding region. When designing our paralegal programs, the Legal Program Advisory Board identified skills necessary for success in the legal environment, as well as needs and preferences of students and employers. We now offer the following:

We are pleased to offer the following information, and invite you to contact UCC Admissions with any questions or to begin the enrollment process.

Placement rates for graduates of our college’s paralegal programs

Both the associate and bachelor’s degree programs have excellent placement rates. Area law firms seek out our graduates; roughly half of students accept permanent employment resulting from internships; and a Career Services representative provides every student with personal job search assistance.

Legal instructor credentials

Every paralegal instructor at our college is an attorney or paralegal with extensive experience in the area of law presented. Most instructors in the paralegal program teach part-time while practicing law, working as paralegals, or managing legal departments or law offices. They bring invaluable real-world experience to our classrooms.

Practical training for realistic situations

A successful paralegal will have extensive legal knowledge and highly developed skills, including essential “soft skills” – critical thinking, analytical, interpersonal, management and communication skills. In legal courses, required technical courses and liberal arts courses, UCC students practice writing, presentation, problem solving and computer applications they later apply in the workplace. Paralegal students actually practice all tasks entry-level paralegals are expected to perform.

Small classes, personal attention, flexibility, multiple locations

Class sizes are small at UCC – usually under 15 students in a section. Student  testimonials confirm that teachers provide personal attention and are available to provide the support students need to achieve personal and professional goals.

Day and night programs are offered at three UCC campus locations: West Jordan (13 miles south of Salt Lake City Center), Layton and Orem. Students seeking more flexibility combine on-campus with online paralegal and general education courses.*

Utah Career College Paralegal Studies program goals:

  • To prepare graduates for entry-level to mid-level paralegal positions in private law firms, state and federal government agencies, the courts, public service law firms, insurance companies and corporate legal departments
  • To teach students to think critically and analyze legal issues
  • To teach students to express themselves clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • To provide practice in researching legal issues, drafting legal documents, conducting investigations and working with clients and witnesses
  • To teach students to act ethically and to conduct themselves in conformity with the rules of professional conduct
  • To develop essential academic skills for enhanced and continued learning
  • To be responsive to the needs of the legal community
