Students in the Utah Career College Paralegal Studies program volunteer as child advocates in Salt Lake City area courts, making a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children. This service is a natural extension of the students’ commitment to justice and the legal profession.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA)
In July 2008, UCC West Jordan entered into a partnership with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a national organization that trains volunteers to advocate for children in the court system.

Thanks again so much for partnering with the CASA Program and all of your SUPPORT!!! |
A paralegal student or faculty volunteer agrees to do 30 hours of training and makes a one-year commitment to the program. After being assigned to a child, a CASA volunteer investigates the child’s situation, identifies resources and services for the child, makes recommendations to caseworkers and judges regarding the child’s best interests, and monitors the implementation of plans.
The volunteer meets frequently with the child, listening, caring and serving as a constant for the child through the entire process of foster care, reunification or termination of parental rights and/or adoption.
CASA volunteering and paralegal externship credit
Utah Career College provides space for CASA training. If enrolled in a paralegal externship, the student earns externship hours for the training and time spent on the child’s case. Whether receiving college credit or not, a CASA volunteer gains personal knowledge of the juvenile court system and experiences innumerable personal and professional benefits.
Our school is pleased to provide this opportunity for students, staff and instructors to serve the community.
Paralegal studies at Utah Career College
We offer two levels of degree program for students entering the paralegal field:
- Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies, a four-year program that prepares students for mid-level employment with law firms, corporations and government agencies.
- Associate in Paralegal Studies, a two-year degree program. The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree prepares students for entry-level paralegal positions in all types of organizations, and serves as a base for future studies.
